Gardens

After purchasing the property in 1838, Prince Frederik commissioned the landscape architects Petzold and Zocher (who was responsible for Vondel Park in Amsterdam) to redesign the estates.

They laid out De Horsten in the English landscape style, which was very much in vogue at the time. This style sought to create gardens that exemplified Romantic ideals while retaining a natural appearance. Their influence on the landscape can be seen to this day in the mixture of woodland with ponds and winding paths, orchards and fields.
