It creates an environment in which people thrive and is therefore crucial for how people develop and for the development of nations.
As was just said, in 2003, the main theme of the Prince Claus Awards is 'the survival and innovation of crafts'. The granting of the principal award to you, is a recognition for your excellent and exceptional achievements in this field. Your innovative approach has shown to the world parts of Chinese culture that without you would have remained hidden. Your dedication to study culture in its many forms of expression, has contributed to a sense of identity and self-esteem for millions of people. Your expert and unique research into the crafts of China has guaranteed that these elements of Chinese culture have been preserved for many future generations.
Seldom has a scholar operated in such a hands-on way as you did. In your own unique way you have contributed greatly to preserving China's cultural heritage, which is crucial for long term sustainable economic and social development.
It is therefore a great honour for me to present you today with the 2003 Principal Prince Claus Award.
